Rho Pi Phi is a professional fraternity dedicated to friendship, professionalism, and community service. The Lambda Sigma Delta chapter was founded at the University of the Pacific in 1992. We are a co-ed fraternity that welcomes both men and women of good character who are dedicated to the profession of pharmacy. Despite being a young fraternity, we are fearless and are constantly finding innovative ways to incorporate our love for pharmacy in all that we do.
The formation of Rho Pi Phi International Fraternity began with an incident which occurred during the month of November, 1918 at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. A bulletin appeared which implied that students of various denominations of color need not apply for membership into existing fraternities. This aroused a great deal of concern amongst the faculty and the non-fraternity students. With the approval of the Dean, sixteen men and women formed the Ram Bam Pharmaceutical Society. These individuals felt the impact of segregation and therefore formed a non-sectarian organization.
The following year, 1919, Rho Pi Phi Fraternity was organized and chartered. International status was gained with the formation of a Canadian group, Nu Chapter, at the University of Toronto in 1926. In 1922, the first national convention was held and the Constitution was adopted. Alumni chapters were later organized in order to enable members to continue active particupation in Rho Pi Phi after graduation.
Today, we have at least 75 active members who love and enjoy being part of this organization and are always striving to keep the spirit of the past while moving diligenty into the future. We actively give back to our community through help and service while creating pharmacy awareness. Some of our events include making cross-cultural radio announcements, providing facts on summer safety, and raising funds for the American Red Cross in their annual Heart Walk and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk-a-Thon. We're constantly loooking for ways to give people a hand up and the professional activities are endless.
Of course, all work and no play will make anyone go crazy, so we make sure we have our fun times, too! You can find the brothers all around California, from going to conventions held in San Diego, to having a local hangout in Lollicup that can be seen from March Lane. Scavenger hunts, fairs, talent shows, and even our own mini-olympics are just some of the crazy and fun socials that the brothers participate in. A successful camping trip and our first school-wide social are our most recent accomplishments. As we continue to grow, there are sure to be more potlucks, games, and outrageously fun times. As a look towards the future, we are trying to host a student conclave with the other national chapters that are a part of Rho Pi Phi. This way, it will give us an opportunity to meet our fellow brothers from other parts of the United States and eventually, the world.
Every year, we have pre-rush and rush events in the fall and spring semesters, respectively. This is a great way for new prospectives to get a chance to meet the wonderful brothers who make up this fratnerity and discover what Rho Pi Phi is really all about! There is only so much that can be written down; sometimes, experience is a better teacher. Please, don't be shy to approach any of our members and ask questions if you're interested in who we are and what we do.
May I never see in the patient anything but a fellow creature in pain.
Grant me strength, time, and opportunity always to correct what I have acquired, always to extend its domain; for knowledge is immense and the spirit of man can extend infinitely to enrich itself daily with new requirements.
Today he can discover his errors of yesterday and tomorrow he may obtain a new light on what he thinks himself sure of today. O God, Thou has appointed me to watch over the life and depth of thy creatures; here I am ready for my vocation, and now I turn unto my calling."
To contribute to the moral, social, and intellectual welfare of all students in Pharmacy.
That we may take the lamp of research into the dark recesses of things unknown and make our contribution to our fellow man.
